Day 1 Highlights
Tom, Jing and Sebastian all gave a great keynote speech on the state of React in 2017. Tom focused on the adoption of React since the first React conference in 2015 and how much it's grown. The React developer tools on Chrome have been downloaded over half a million times. Adoption of React and React Native across the industry has grown by leaps and bounds as well. Along with the adoption of React and React Native is the importance of innovating and innovating "in place". Breaking changes are painful, and require thousands of users to update their code in one fell swoop isn't feasible or maintainable. Incremental changes are easier to manage and require less overhead. It's exciting to see what the future holds for React!
Jing focused on React Native and how they have incrementally adopted React Native in the various applications across the Facebook ecosystem.
Sebastian talked about performance with React and how React Fiber has improved the performance of React. It was also announced that facebook.com is now using React Fiber!
Ben gave a great talk on 5 features of ES6/ES2015 that have gradually been adopted more and more in React codebases.
The 5 features are:
- Spread Operator
- Arrow functions
- Async functions
It's a great tutorial if you haven't learned about these topics and a really awesome refresher even if you're already familiar with them!
Lin Clark makes great cartoons to explain concepts in React and at ReactConf17, she gave a talk on React Fiber and what happens "under the hood" of React Fiber.
